The Slovak National Uprising, declared on August 29th, 1944, was an integral part of the common struggle of European states against fascism. The participation of 27 nations and ethnic groups is represented in our issue by the heroic fight of French partisans in the defence of Strečno, where for five days the main thrust of the German army was concentrated in an attempt to command the strategically important Košice to Bohumín railway. In 1956 a monument to the French partisans - the work of Beisetzer and Snopko - was unveiled on Zvonica hill near Strečno. A quotation from its inscription is featured in our stamp.
