Janko Alexy studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Bukovac, Pirner and Švabinský. He worked in Martin, Piešťany and Bratislava. Alexy´s work is of seminal importance in the development of modern Slovak art, particularly in his early period, when he made a significant contribution to village-genre painting. His preferred medium was pastel and here he excelled particularly in genre scenes of autumnal coulour which capture the character of the land and people.
