Janko Alexy (25. 1. 1894, Liptovský Mikuláš - 22. 9. 1970, Bratislava), National Artist, painter and writer. Janko Alexy studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Bukovac, Pirner and Švabinský. He worked in Martin, Piešťany and Bratislava. Alexy´s work is of seminal importance in the development of modern Slovak art, particularly in his early period, when he made a significant contribution to village-genre painting. His preferred medium was pastel and here he excelled particularly in genre scenes of autumnal coulour which capture the character of the land and people. He also worked with stained glass and tapestry. Alexy also wrote stories and novels, impressionist in character and incorporating autobiographical elements, and art criticism and journalism.
