Vel'ký Kliž - the municipality at the foot of the Tríbeč mountain range, belongs to the district of Partizánske, and is made up oftwo local parts - Klíž and Klížske Hradište.
The first written mention about the municipality is from 1230, even though its history is much older. The Benedictine abbey established between the years 1074 -1077 had a turbulent history but it remained until 1562 in the municipality. Some other orders came here later.
The most precious and the oldest well preserved historical monument is the Romanesque Church of St. Michaelfrom the 11th century, situated in the cemetery of Klížske Hradište. The church was without a roof until recently. It consists of the semicircular apse. nave and circular tower near the westem facade. According to its small dimensions (nave 3,92 x 5,33 meters) we can assume that it was not a monastic church. The fragments of the wooden choir show that the church was manorial. The church tower has an unusual form and it can't be found in any ofthe historical documents.
